Canada was the first country to select Holstein Fresians as the select breed of milk producing cattle.
He was specialist given the job of improving the milk yield in the UK after the first world war and introduced the breed by giving a H-F calf to the children of farmers who then recorded what they were fed and eventually their milk yield. The heifers were then sold to farmers with £5 deducted as the cost of the calf when given to the children.

Hemyock Parish Survey dated 1752

The Milles Parochial Returns were a series of questionnaires sent out by Dean Milles to all the parishes in the county in the 1750’s. The responses came from about 250 parishes, usually from the parson, but sometimes from the schoolmaster or another informed parishioner. The questions covered a wide field, including inquiries about the church. These returns provide a valuable snapshot of the state of the parishes at that time.
Hemyock School Diary for 1911-1912

We have the complete diary for Hemyock School when it was located opposite the Post Office. This page covers a period between 1911 and 1912. Mr Baxter was the headmaster. We will try to upload to this site more pages as time progresses. The school operated from the end of the 19th Century up to the 1970’s when the new school was built. The old school building was then used as social housing for the community.
Sanctuary at Smeatharpe School

Lady Sidmouth at Upottery Manor wanted villagers at Smeatharpe to attend a local CofE service so converted the school chapel into a proper CofE facility with the inscription on the beam of One God, “One Church and One Baptism.”
