Pollit and Wigzell engine plate dated 1910

Coldharbour Mill is a 200 year old spinning mill, built by Thomas Fox, to spin woollen and later worsted yarns. The Mill is a rare example of surviving Georgian architecture, industry and enterprise and is based in Uffculme, Devon.

The Steam Engines are regularly started up and on display to the public.

Steam power made the mill one of the most successful in the country

The mill was famous for the production of putties, for the British Army.

Frontispiece to the King James’ Bible, 1611, shows the Twelve Apostles at the top. Moses and Aaron flank the central text. In the four corners sit Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, authors of the four gospels, with their symbolic animals. At the top, over the holy spirit in a form of a dove, is the Tetragrammaton.

The Hemyock History and Archiving Association were please to welcome back Mr Amyas Crump, as guest speaker for April 2011.
Amyas conducted a wonderfully nostalgic tour through the East Devon Railway network and brought the full house to a safe halt at Hemyock Station, through a series of well though out slides.

Uffculme Jam and Cider Factory. 1974

On the corner of East Street, High Street and Ashley Road is the listed building that has been a brewery and general business building. In this 1974 picture, the building was being used as a Jam and Cider Factory.

It was originally built by William Furze, in 1858. The red brick construction sits on a stone plinth. The tower has a slate roof clevely concealed by parapet.

The polygonal building is four stories high and has a date stone set high which reads ‘Built W.A.D.F. 1858‘.

The Old Brewery is a prominent landmark in Uffculme.

Furze’s Probate of will and codicils lists simply him as, ‘Brewer‘. The documents (reference O/064/008) are available to the public, at the London Metropolitan Archives. The documents were drafted in 1845 and 1855.

Railway lines heading towards Lloyd Maunder feed mill in Uffculme

The Culm Valley Railway lines heading towards the feed mill at Uffculme. We have contacted Lloyd Maunder to see if they can offer us any help on establishing some more information about this photo. They seemed very helpful when we called them and we await their reply.

We know the family business began in 1898, although Lloyd’s father, FJP Maunder, was in the meat trade around 1879, in Witheridge, Devon.

Little has changed in this view of Bridge Street, Uffculme. Probably taken in the early 70s, as the railway lines have been removed, although the level crossing gates are still shown.

The Esso garage appears to have the name of the proprietor shown as Featherstone. Perhaps you can recall the Featherstone’s or are part of the family?

The car and Co-op may give clues to the date of this picture which is unknown to us, at the time of publishing. The Co-op branch is Tiverton Industrial No. 2.

Open Days – This Weekend

The Blackdown Archives project is opening its doors this weekend to capture peoples memories and display its collection of more than 2300 local family photographs.

During the second weekend of every month, from April to August, locals and visitors alike will be welcomed by members of the Hemyock History and Archiving Association voluntary keepers of the historic records.

One by one, the fragile photographs have been scanned and added to the collection. Many have been digitally enhanced to capture interesting detail, often missed until now.

Now, these images are being added to the Blackdown Archives website a programme part-funded by the Blackdown Hills AONB Sustainable Development Fund and Making It Local.

Already, the pictures have locals recalling people, places and memories of yesteryear. By opening the doors to the public, the team hope to capture many more of these fascinating stories and add them to the website, for the Blackdown Hills community to share.

Pictures and documents that anyone would like added to the archive are most welcome all will be scanned and the originals returned while you wait.

Enhanced photo quality print will be available to order and make ideal framed pictures.

The Open Days run from 12:00 – 3:00 at the Blackdown Healthy Living Centre, Sat 9 & Sun 10 April, Sat 14 & Sun 15 May, Sat 11 & Sun 12 June, Sat 9 & Sun 10 July and Sat 13 & Sun 14 August.
