I have an original notebook of a Job Salter he wrote regarding him going to war – the Boer War? I will dig it out and check later today. Interesting. If it is your Job Salter you are very welcome to it. I assume that he was from Hemyock.

The battle was in Africa but earlier than the Boer War. “The Battle of Abu Klea, also known as the Battle of Abu Tulayh, took place between 16 and 18 January 1885, at Abu Klea, Sudan, between the British Desert Column and Mahdist forces encamped near Abu Klea. The Desert Column, a force of approximately 1,400 soldiers, started from Korti, Sudan on 30 December 1884; the Desert Column’s mission, in a joint effort titled the “Gordon Relief Expedition”, was to march across the Bayuda Desert to the aid of General Charles George Gordon at Khartoum, Sudan, who was besieged there by Mahdist forces.” The first part of the notebook consists of very victorian verses. Good Christian poems. A mother talking about her son becoming a soldier.
Then the Job Salter notes (30 pages) were taken from April 1906 when at Devon County Dairy School run by the Knowlman family at what is now Culm Pyne, Hemyock. This became the first young farmers of what became the National Association of Young farmers. Job Salter was learning about milking, separating cream, double cream cheese, butter making etc. The Hemyock Milk Factory would collect churns of milk from farms over a wide area, pasteurise and fill tankers taken by rail to London for delivery the next day. Plus produce butter. The railway only closed in 1976. Notebooks were expensive in those days and used by different people for writing poems, etc, etc.
