A very old photograph pre 1900 of the Square showing the original water pump. The window of the coffee shop is on the left, the cottages that were burnt down in the centre, then A. Wides original shop and on the right Hides shop always known as Up Steps
I would be very interested to know why a street lamp has been put on top of the old water pump and who are the names written on it’s side. Thank You
Morning Pam
You have better eyes than I have Pam. We have other photos in the archives and I think you are right that there is a lamp. Do you have any ideas? It probably helped light up the square.

Can I add to my previous email – it is the reference to the South African Boer War that I am interested in – what connextion did Hemyock have to this war ?
Hello again Pam.
Would you like me to list the people from Hemyock who were involved with the Boer War?
Regards
Michael
